Penton is seeking a Digital/Managing Editor to join the BEEF franchise team in the Minneapolis, MN office. 
 
BEEF is the authoritative source of business management and production information for U.S. beef cattle industry professionals. Via a synergy of in-print, online, and in-person products, BEEF provides information to help producers more efficiently, cost-effectively, and profitably manage their businesses.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for executing the creation and production of the editorial product, with special emphasis in building synergies between the electronic and print products. 
  • Participate in the execution and management of the wide variety of products and projects developed for editorial purposes in print, online (website, e-newsletters, audio/video, etc.) and in-person (i.e., seminars)
  • Engage in the transition to a new open source platform in 2010 and beyond.
  • Direct layout and production of each issue to ensure deadlines are observed. Responsible for keeping copy and magazine production on deadline. Performs copy editing for grammar, punctuation and style. Assists art director in photo and graphic arrangement and provides assistance to art director in making corrections to layout utilizing desktop publishing software.
  • Conceive researches and writes accurate, concise articles that require minimal editing.
  • Produce audio version (synopsis – potentially sponsored) of monthly magazine for posting on website, as well as more frequent interviews with people of industry interest for audio downloads.
  • Keep abreast of evolving technology and opportunities presented by new media, and how the franchise can utilize and capitalize on this potential to better serve readers. Act as franchise representative on all new media issues.
  • Assist the editor by providing day-to-day management of editorial staff and contributors in developing and editing news reports, features, department material, photography and other items for the franchise, with special emphasis on development and furtherance of the magazine’s electronic identity.
  • Provide own photography for articles personally generated and written. Responsible for seeing material written by others has adequate photography or artwork to properly illustrate the material.
  • Represent the franchise and the company at industry events and on occasional sales calls, developing and maintaining contacts in the beef industry to help achieve the franchise goals.
  • Assist the publisher and company managers in guiding the franchise and related products toward increased profitability by maintaining a close working relationship with industry leaders and maintaining a keen awareness of structural changes in the industry and events related to it.
 
Position Qualifications:
  • Degree in Journalism or technical writing preferred; or bachelor's degree in animal science with magazine or newspaper writing experience.
  • Minimum of three years of magazine experience, preferably involving beef cattle writing and photography. Background and experience in new media applications required.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills that allow the juggling of various tasks simultaneously. Candidate must have the ability to work smoothly with full-time editorial staff, freelancers, regular contributors and audience development team in planning and producing a high-quality digital and published content. 
  • We’re looking for a creative, visually oriented person with strong grammar, writing and photography skills, familiar with publication layout and production procedures. 
  • Must be adept at doing interviews by phone or face-to-face and possess strong verbal expression skills.
  • Good background and knowledge in new media communications with exposure to new media technologies (Facebook, Twitter, web videos, search engine optimization, blogging, You Tube, etc.).
